Terra Nova Cancelled!

TnovaI just learned that Terra Nova has been cancelled! I’m really disappointed in this news. I was really starting to enjoy the show.

At first I was a bit confused by all the different challenges the Shannon family had to deal with. The “6′ers”, the environment and being a family with two teenage kids and a much younger child (which they were not supposed to have.

I was very impressed with the talent they pulled for this show. I mean there was lets see, Steven Spielberg, Stephen Lang of Avatar fame, Jason O’Mara of Life on Mars (American version) … OK, I’m probably the only one who liked that series, and Christine Adams of Batman Begins, TRON: Legacy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Heroes, Pushing Daisies, Doctor Who, Stargate SG-1 and even EastEnders! (OK, that last one was only because I used to watch EastEnders when our local PBS channel put it on a long time ago. BBCA had it on for a little while, but I guess British soap opera’s just don’t have the charm that American ones do.)

I have to assume that Falling Skies has also bit the dust, but I haven’t heard anything about it yet. The site I use to keep up on shows that are cancelled is showing Falling Skies as returning Summer 2012. I guess we shall see. IMDB.com has a listing for episode 1 and episode 4 of season two.

To be fair, Falling Skies did have a grittier feel to it than Terra Nova. Maybe folks were expecting Jurassic Park.

New Hulu created show: Battleground

Battleground hulu

Hulu premiered a new scripted comedy February 14th called Battleground. It’s about a Wisconsin state Senate race.

Sadly, it’s not a new idea. It’s just a copy of The Office. Instead of a “mock documentary” about a Scranton, Pennsylvanian paper company, we see a mod documentary about a Wisconsin state Senate race. The characters are almost identical between the shows. The camera work is pretty much identical. The characters talk to the camera in both shows. There are interviews with individual characters in both shows. An the writing is pretty much for 14 year olds.

Sadly, Battleground is nothing that Hulu can hang on the fridge.

I haven’t watched Netflix’s foray into scripted television called Lilyhammer yet. I do plan to. It sounds a little more creative than Battleground. So I’m hoping for the best.

New shows I have discovered since cutting the cord

Since we cut the cord here, we have discovered several shows. Some we might have discovered if we were still watching cable, but maybe not. After all, we skipped pretty much all the commercials we could with the TiVo and the DVR that we got from Charter. iTunes helps out a little by offering free pilot episodes of many new shows. That’s how I found out about Ringer.

Most of what we have discovered were thanks to Hulu.

Hulu’s first screen shows 7 shows they are highlighting at the moment. I suppose it’s similar to iTunes main screen highlighting several items. I found quite a few interesting shows thanks to that screen.

Stargate Universe Starts This Week!

universe-series-header.jpg

Normally, I don’t get all that excited about a new television series. However, I have to admit that I am a huge Stargate geek. I have all 10 seasons of Stargate: SG1 and all 5 seasons of Stargate Atlantis on DVD. I have found both series to be very entertaining and visually stunning. The stunt work is outstanding and fight scenes are a thing of beauty.

There was a lot of concern over the newest series of the Stargate franchise, but from what I have seen in the trailers and read about from fan sites and the official SGU website, I am very hopeful that the series will be as interesting as the previous two series have been.

Plus, I am dying to find out the explanation for why the entire gate spins in this new series. Or at least that’s what it appears to do.

Here in St. Louis, the series starts Friday, October 2nd at 7pm CDT on SyFy.

'Torchwood: Children Of Earth' – The Best Television On Television To Date, Ever!

torchwood-title.png

I just finished watching the BBC’s new Torchwood Miniseries called “Children Of Earth“. I watch a lot of television. Probably more than I should for someone who isn’t working right now. Mostly though, when I am battling illnesses. This series of 5 Torchwood episodes have to be the best written, acted, directed, etc… television I have ever watched… Ever! I don’t write this lightly. If this miniseries went as long as the new Battlestar Galactica did, it would be the “must see” series of 2009. However, it’s only 5 hours of television that can not be missed.

The episodes take place in 5 days, one for each episode. A little like 24, but a way better story. I’m not going to give away any spoilers since the miniseries is scheduled to run here in the United States on BBC-America a week from Monday, July, 20th. So this post won’t be very long. I will say that the story holds up to fine scrutiny with very little if any errors. Unlike the recent American miniseries, Impact. They even made a point to point out that America was still “dark” when the first event in the show took place at 8:40am GMT. Unlike Impact which seemed to be the same time all around the world.

Only other thing I am going to say is: If you have to miss watching something on television the week of the 20th, don’t let it be Torchwood on BBC-America. You won’t regret it!

Update: Apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks this Torchwood was a true winner: Torchwood Was Amazing, But What Happens Next?
