Pinball HD Collection

Pinball HD Collection Icon

First game to talk about here is Pinball HD Collection. This isn’t the first version of this game that was released to the iOS App Store. It actually started out as individual pinball tables. The Deep, Wild West Pinball and Jungle Style Pinball. Then they combined the tables into Pinball HD. Then they created this app, Pinball HD Collection.

I absolutely love Pinball! OOO Gameprom does Pinball better than any other developer in both the iOS and Mac App Stores, period! I have tried just about all of them. My iTunes Apps section has 48 Pinball games, and there are more in the iOS App Store that I haven’t purchased/downloaded.

LittleBigPlanet 2 arrives with freeze-up issues (Fixed now)

So LittleBigPlanet 2 finally arrived yesterday (1/18/2011) and I ran out to GameStop to pick up my copy pretty much first thing this morning.

I put the disc in my PS3, waited while it installed a huge amount of data to my PS3 HDD, then watched in joy as it started up.

I was enjoying the first couple of levels of MediaMolecule content when my PS3 totally froze up. Even pressing the PS button on the controller did nothing at all. I had to getup and touch the power button on the PS3 to power it down then power it back up again.

As I continued to play LPB2, about 10-15 minutes into the second session, it froze up again. A different location in the game, but the same freeze up that makes me getup and physically power down the PS3.

A third freeze up and yet a different location in the game tells me that there is something definitely fishy with either the PS3 or LPB2.

Other games on the PS3 work just fine. Lego Harry Potter crashes back to the PS3 menu system occasionally, no freeze up, but the rest of my games run just fine.

So I have to assume that LBP2 has an issue. I did a quick search with Google and saw this post on Gamespot. So, thankfully, I’m not the only one seeing this freeze-up issue.

I suppose this is the price we bleeding-edge’rs have to pay for wanting to be one of the first folks to play a game. Hopefully, MediaMolecule will find and patch the game soon so that I can finally play what will probably wind up being the “Game of the Year” for many publications/game blogs for 2011.

Update 1/21/11: Looks like LBP2 is working perfectly now. My PS3 told me this morning that it was doing something to a database (I can’t remember exactly what it said) and when I tried LBP2 afterword, it ran for well over 2 hours without locking up. I don’t know exactly what fixed the lockups, if it was the db update or a combination of deleting all my old LBP data and the db update, but it’s functioning perfectly now and I’ve been able to play through the first creator’s area and make a decent dent in the second creator’s area. That and played around with about 30 community levels.

I haven’t seen everything that LBP2 can do yet, but I’m convinced that it’s a huge step above the first LBP!

Console Gaming

sony_playstation_3.png

Lately, I’ve been doing some serious gaming on the PS3. For my birthday, I got Red Dead Redemption and ModNation Racers and pre-ordered LittleBigPlanet 2. I also recently grabbed DeathSpank, DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue, Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light and finally Magic: The Gathering – Duals of the Plainswalkers for Windows.

I rarely buy Windows games these days since my Windows box is getting pretty dated. The graphics card is RADEON X800 series card. Not all that capable for the current games out there. Fortunately, good enough for the M:TG game.

deathspank.png

DeathSpank and DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue is an amazing toung-in-cheek game that reminds me a lot of WoW without all the other online players. You have a main quest line to follow with tons of side quests to keep you occupied. All in an environment similar to WoW but displayed in a very unique way. There are puzzles to solve, tons of puns and an incredible amount of audio content that speaks every line of dialog in the game.

You play the not-so-humble DeathSpank. A hero out to locate and obtain “The Artifact”. An artifact of unspeakable power that now one actually knows what it does, but it’s really powerful!

I have not been playing all that long, but managed to get my hands on the infamous artifact, only to lose it and have to track it down again. Money in the game is pretty easy to come by, but there just isn’t all that much in the game that you actually need to buy. You get most of what you need from creature drops.

You gain levels and experience as any RPG would. Instead of skill points, you get Hero cards that increase certain aspects of your abilities.

You carry 4 weapons that if you use them all together, become more powerful. If you use the same weapon twice or more on a single creature, you hit for the power of that weapon. If you switch weapons (using the X, O, Triangle, and Square buttons on the PS3), you double, triple, etc the power of the weapon used. Very important when attacking creatures that are a higher level than yourself.

A downside to the game is that you can only hold 5 health potions which can be a problem when going up against some of the bigger bosses.

Overall, a great game for the measly price of $15 per game. DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue is the second game in this franchise that was just recently released.

RedDeadRedemptionLogo.png

Red Dead Redemption has been a huge surprise to me. Sure, it’s by RockStarGames, the same folks that do the Grand Theft Auto franchise, so I should have expected an amazing game, but I didn’t expect a “Western” game to suck me in. I expected it to be fun and graphically amazing, but I am blown away by how real the game feels. Mind you, I didn’t live through the wild west days, but it feels like I am now.

The environment is just unreal. Wild animals all over the place, hundreds and hundreds of NPC’s doing all kinds of things filling the world with some real life. There is never a dull moment in Red Dead Redemption.

You play a bounty hunter with a sordid past trying to bring the leader of a gang you used to lead to justice. There are plenty of wild and wonder characters to meet along the way to help you with this task. Along the way, you build up Fame and Honor as well as challenges like Sharpshooting, Hunting, and Survivalist and others.

Along with the main story line, there are tons of side missions and quite a few mini-games like Five Finger Fillet, Horseshoes, Liar’s Dice, Poker, etc… Plenty of activities to keep you busy with the game for many, many hours.

The think that keeps me going back is just seeing the world. There looks like hundreds of square miles of world to explore with mines, oil rigs, ravines, rivers, a train that travels all around the area, stage coach’s to get you from place to place quickly, and some amazing looking scenery that make you feel like you are visiting Monument Valley, Utah!

lauracroft.png

Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light was another major surprise to me. I have played a couple of the original Laura Croft games way back in the day, but wasn’t really all that impressed with them. Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light is a totally different vision for the franchise. Mainly it’s an isometric view game as opposed to behind the character view of the previous games. That alone interested me in the game more than anything else.

The game has some amazing graphics that make working the puzzles a real joy. In fact, there is a section where you have to pull together 8 rock spheres in order to open a gate. getting them to where they need to be is just gorgeous. If you play it, you will see.

The puzzles are pretty fun to figure out. So far I haven’t had to look up any hints to figure out what I was supposed to do, and there are some times more than one way to solve the puzzle. Just so long as the puzzle is solved is all that matters.

Controlling Laura is a little strange (the choices the developers made with the PS3 controller) and I have had some difficulty getting used to controlling her guns and other tools.

Each section has certain goals to achieve. There are bonuses to obtain by being agile or getting a part of the environment into another part. The goals are displayed so you don’t have to figure that part out. Achieving the goals are sometimes quite difficult.

In Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light, you play Laura (of course), helping the “Guardian of Light” to stop an evil “over the top” bad guy that was released from it’s prison of stone by some greedy treasure seekers. You know, the usualy story line. Along the way, you find Red Skulls to find and gather, as well as sparkling gems to help bring up your score. There are usually 3 score thresholds to achieve, the last bringing you a new item. You also locate other items, artifacts, and weapons along the way.

I’ve played through 4 stages so far and have been super impressed with all of them. There are 14 stages overall, each has the score challenges as well as reward challenges like the ones I mentioned earlier where you have to do something special.

I can’t wait to see what environments await me in the future stages.

Finally, I recently purchased Magic: The Gathering – Duals of the Planeswalkers. I haven’t really started playing that one yet. I just grabbed it when I saw it was on sale for $18 including all the DLC packs. Quite a deal really. It’s now selling for $35.

I used to play the actual card game way back in the late 90′s. I had a pretty big card collection until I dumped them all. I hate to think how much money I put into those cards. At least I made someone’s day by giving them my collection.

There are now 17,500+ cards to Magic’s name. I can’t get over that. I found an iPad app that is the IMDB of Magic cards. MTG Magic the Gathering Trading Card Game (TCG) database is the name of the app. It currently sells for $0.99 The database holds over 17,500 cards. 99% of them have their pictures along with full details of the cards.

That app was pretty much the inspiration of getting the game on the computer. I wanted to maybe see if I could still play the game without having to actually pay thousands more for the actual cards.

I’ll update you soon on my review of the game once I have had a chance to really play it for a while.

Mobigame Announces that Edge has Officially Been Released

Razorianfly has posted an article that Mobigame has sent out emails to iPhone App blogs that report that they have won the right to sell their game “Edge” on the App Store!!

During one year we had to fight a fraud to release our game in the U.S and in the U.K. Today the justice will take care of him. We fought not only for us, but also for other indies and bigger companies. We were not alone during this year, and we thank all of you for all your efforts. Thanks to US the word “edge” is now free to exist on the App Store like on any other marketplace, and games like Mirror’s Edge, Shadow Edge, Killer Edge Racing or Edge by Mobigame can live on our iDevices. If you want to read more about this story, please read http://chaosedge.wordpress.com/.

chaosedge.com has a short post about Edge being restored to the App Store. They are being a little tentative by titling the article: “For the Last time?” Understandable really considering that previous times the app was restored to the App Store, it was later removed by Langdell.

So it appears that we have heard the last of Tim Langdell and his claims that “Edge” is his trademark.

So, congratulations to Mobigame and all the folks that worked very hard to convince the powers that be that “Edge” is not a valid trademark owned by Tim Langdell anymore as well as being able to sell one of the best games in the App Store that no one could buy, but now can. :)

Also, Mobigame is celebrating this victory by putting Edge on sale for $0.99 for the weekend. This is the best time to grab a copy if you were not able to grab the game while it was available in the App Store previously.

Edge by Mobigame is Back in the App Store!!

Its hard to say how long it will be back for, but the game Edge is back in the App Store!

I haven’t seen any news from Mobigame or anyone else yet as to why it’s returned. I’m hoping that Mobigame and Langdell have finally resolved their differences and this is a permanent change. Up till now, every time Edge appears in the App Store, it’s removed a few days later.

There is nothing on Mobigame’s website since the game had been available in almost all other country stores except the USA and UK stores.

Hopefully, this is great news for us customers. Edge is an amazing game and well worth the $4.99 that is being asked for it. If you haven’t been able to buy it up until now, I suggest grabbing it now before it disappears again. Unless there has been a change in the relationship between Mobigame and Langdell, I suspect that Mr. Langdell will be contacting Apple shortly to have Edge removed again. Hopefully, I’m wrong and the huge saga is finally over, but this is Langdell we are talking about here. The man has a huge screw loose, no lights at all on in the house, etc…

ZOMG!!! Pinball Remote & The Pinball For Mac Is Out!!!

pinballremoteicon.png

I haven’t been more excited for a game coming out than I am right now! The Pinball and Pinball Remote is a very unique combination of pinball for the Mac and iPhone/iPod touch/iPad that allows you to play pinball on your computer using your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad as the flippers/ball launcher.

Both The Pinball and Pinball Remote are free and gives you the ability to play Wild West Pinball for free as well. The Deep and Jungle Style Pinball are in-app purchases for $2.99 each.

The following is a screen shot from my Mac as the Wild West Pinball table is being flown over (click the thumbnail image for the fill sized image):

thepinball_tm.png

Once The Pinball is launched on the Mac, go over to your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad and launch Pinball Remote. Once you have selected a table to play and pressed the play button, you are presented with this screen:

pinballremote.png

The screen shows two very dark blue buttons (left and right paddle buttons) and a slider in the middle for the ball launcher. The button above the slider is the pause button. You can quit the game, adjust settings, etc… from there.

The performance is astounding and the tables are gorgeous! I loved the original pinball games: The Deep Pinball, Wild West Pinball, and Jungle Style Pinball for the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. Each only costing $0.99. They were easy to afford and a lot of fun to play. Now, they are even more exciting simply because they are running on a full blown computer. The best part is that since you use the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad as a remote to play the tables, you don’t have to be sitting at your computer to play. So hooking up a MacBook to an home entertainment system and playing on a 42″ LCD television is going to be totally outrageous!

I can’t recommend this game enough! It’s easily worth “FREE”, but it’s also completely worth the $5.98 for the other two tables!

Valve's Steam Confirmed For Mac (updated)

steamlogo.png

Update: It’s official, Valve announced it’s move to the Mac today on their own website.

According to Inside Mac Games, Valve Software sent out info to Mac and PC websites confirming it’s intent to bring Steam and a catalog of games to the Macintosh.

This is great news for the Mac. Steam is a great digital download platform for gaming. Its pretty much as easy to buy games in Steam as it is to purchase applications in Apple’s AppStore. Plus, if for some reason, you need to download your game again, that is just as easy as well.

Looks like there will be a more official announcement at the Game Developers Conference next week (March 9th – 13th).

I can’t wait for Steam to arrive for the Mac. It’s one more sign that the Mac is just as much a gaming platform as Windows is. Sure, there are not as many titles out there yet, but if Valve feels that there is enough to bring Steam over, then its growing pretty quickly.

PopCap's Plants vs. Zombies Arrives In AppStore And Kicks Butt

pvz.png

Update: Didn’t take very long for Plants vs. Zombies to top the Paid Apps chart as well. I wonder if they had a free trial version of the game if the game would top all three charts. Or, if players had a chance to see the game in action before purchasing it, they wouldn’t buy it.

PopCap’s Plants vs. Zombies made it’s appearance in the AppStore this morning and before the end of the day has made it’s way to the #2 Paid App and #1 Top Grossing App. A truly amazing feet for a PopCap game, much less any game in the AppStore.

It’s currently received 458 ratings, 444 of which are 5 star, and only 3 are one star. The one star complaints are that the mini games in the PC game are not in the iPhone game. One reviewer spent the $2.99 so that he could basically tell us that he would rather be: “SHOT, ELECTRICUTED, FLAMED, BOMBED, AND BURIED ALIVE THEN PLAY THIS PIECE OF $&@!” (That is an exact character for character quote). The third one star review basically thinks the game is boring and can’t believe all the positive reviews are from players. Has this guy never gone to the PopCap website and played the free web version?

I mention these reviews because the game is pretty much an exact copy of the PC version (minus the mini games mentioned in that one star review). It plays very well, and is actually a bit easier to play since you just have to tap the sunlight instead of trying to chase it down with a mouse.

PopCap has a real winner here and is probably going to make a fortune off this title alone. Especially at the $2.99 price point. This app is definitely one to grab if you are a fan of PopCap.

OMG! Langdell Did It Again! Edge/Edgy Is Gone Again!

edge.png

WTF does Langdell have against Mobigame anyway! This guy is a huge ass! I can’t believe Apple took down Edgy (for the 4th time).

I was seriously considering buying Edgy (Edge and Edgy are separate apps so if Edgy were to get updated, owners of Edge wouldn’t get the updates) just to support Mobigame in their battle against this asshole Langdell that seems to have a huge grudge against Mobigame.

Us gamers need to support Mobigame in order to get people like Langdell put behind bars. Its clear that no matter what Mobigame does to make Langdell happy, Langdell just takes the next step to torture Mobigame.

Please, if you haven’t purchased Cross Fingers from Mobigame in the AppStore, do so. It’s a great game and I’m sure that they can use every penny they get to fight this bum.

EA To Release Mirror's Edge On iPhone…

ea-logo.png

This article is not another instance of an announcement of Electronic Arts releasing Mirror’s Edge to the iPhone. That has been done by about 50 websites in the blogosphere. Man, I have never seen so many places letting their readers know that Mirror’s Edge is coming.

Nope, this is an article talking about Tim Langdell and his claim of owning the trademark to the word “Edge”. Langdell has gone after Mobigame because they named their iPhone game Edge and Langdell had it removed from the AppStore 3 times! The website ChaosEdge has a long log of all the strange goings on between Tim Langdell and his questionable antics. This article talks about Langdell’s claim that he owns the trademark for Mirror’s Edge, EA’s game.

My only concern is will Langdell write to Apple to have Mirror’s Edge removed from the AppStore once it’s released. Since Apple is quick to remove apps from the store with the slightest notification, it’s probably going to be an interesting release.

I’m actually hoping that Langdell has the balls to go after EA’s Mirror’s Edge. EA has a very large bank account and will protect it’s intellectual property with all the lawyers at their disposal. If Langdell does go after EA, we can only hope that EA takes him down and we’ll not have to hear about him again after that.

So, go ahead Langdell, go after Mirror’s Edge on the iPhone, please!!!
