The Joy Of Tech Does It Again!

1372superthumb.png

Once again, The Joy Of Tech has “hit the nail on the head” when it comes to Apple zealots. I don’t consider myself one of these zealots because I don’t read every little rumor piece and try to speculate what it all means.

In the run up to the iPad’s announcement. Everyone and their brother was speculating that there would be a “true” Mac Tablet. Boy were they ever wrong. However, they still feel a Mac Tablet is in Apple’s future.

So now all this noise about Jobs and Schmidt talking… So sad really.

Still, here is the comic panel for [Today's The Joy Of Tech](http://www.geekculture.com/joyoftech/joyarchives/1372.html):

Palm’s woes mount as its stock is devalued to $0 and unsold inventory estimates balloon « Boy Genius Report:

“Palm’s woes continue to balloon after the handset maker announced its earnings for Q3 2010. As a recap, Palm reported $349 million in revenue with a $22 million net loss for Q3 2010 which looks rosy when compared to the $90.6 million revenue and $98 million net loss reported in Q3 2009. Though revenue has increased and net loss has narrowed year over year, Palm continues its downward slide with net loss increasing from $13.7 million in Q2 2010 to the $22 million quoted above. Palm shipped 960,000 handsets in Q3 2010 which represents a 23% increase from Q2 2010 and a 300% increase year over year. This abundance of handsets is Palm’s downfall as the handset maker revealed that it has only sold a mere 408,000 units in Q3 2010, leading to a standing inventory that some estimate to be a staggering 1.15 million. Palm has put handset production on hold (told you so) while carriers sell through the current inventory which is equal to six months worth of retail sales at last year’s rate. As a result, Palm’s Q4 2010 outlook is dire with the company projecting revenue of only $150 million, a figure that falls far short of the $305 million that was expected. Read on after the jump.”

I don’t know much about the stock market or company finances, but this news can’t be good for Palm. Looking at Palms stock history for the last 10 years shows a company that was doing amazing during the .COM boom, but fell apart not long after that and has been struggling ever since.

Looking at that graph, the value of the stock was once, $802 a share. That’s an amazing value. Now, it’s barely $4 a share, and that’s assuming that the headline from Boy Genius Report is either not true or some financial thing that I don’t understand and the Stock value on the market shows one thing while the actual value is another.

I can’t say I’m saddened by this. Since Palm was being pretty slimy about using iTunes to sync their phones to for a while back there. I don’t know if they are still doing it, but Apple hasn’t updated iTunes in a while so they either stopped or Apple stopped caring.

One good thing from this is we won’t have to see those creepy ads with that really creepy lady:

Keyboard Shortcut: Safari (Command-Option-Delete)

Update (3/19/10 – 3:20pm): Sorry about the formatting earlier. I am having issues with MarkDown and this blog. For some reason, I can’t get the plugin I installed to work correctly.

Command-Option-Delete ( menusym-command.gif menusym-option.gif menusym-delete.gif ):

Remove topmost webpage from “Show the previous page” history

safari-back-history.png

So, I came across this keyboard shortcut totally by accident while I was trying to remove podcast subscriptions from within iTunes. In iTunes, you use Command-Option-Delete to unsubscribe to a podcast and remove the files from iTunes and your hard drive.

Well, I didn’t know it at the time but Safari was my active application when I was attempting to remove a podcast. Sometimes iTunes doesn’t become the active application even if you click on it with the mouse. Not sure why that is, but I hope its a bug that is fixed when the new Snow Leopard (10.6.3) is finally released to the public.

Nothing happened in iTunes, but I noticed an update in Safari’s window. I didn’t think much about it at the moment, and attempted to delete the podcast a second time. Again, I saw an update in Safari’s window. So this time I paid attention to Safari and noticed that when I pressed Command-Option-Delete, the current webpage went away and Safari animated the page zooming back to the Top Sites page.

Well, at that point, I realized that the key sequence was actually doing something constructive. I went to a website, clicked on a few links to build up the back page history and pressed Command-Option-Delete again. This time, the browser went back to the previous page. When I looked at the back page history, I saw that one less entry was in it.

So to explain a little better, take the screen shot above that shows:

  • Safari: Browser Window and Menu Shortcuts
  • safari keyboard shortcuts – Google Search
  • Google
  • topsites://

Now I press Command-Option-Delete and the top most entry is removed and the web browser shows the Google Search results page and the back page history showing:

  • safari keyboard shortcuts – Google Search
  • Google
  • topsites://

Press the combo again and the Google search results page goes away and the browser shows Google and the back page history showing:

  • Google
  • topsites://

One last time and the browser animates the Google page going back to it’s position in the Top Sites page:

  • topsites://

I attempted to find this keyboard shortcut documented somewhere, but I couldn’t. So here you go. I hope you find it as useful as I have!

Want GodFinger or We Rule But Live in the US? Read On…

Update (3/20/10 – 8:28pm): As of today (3/20), We Rule as been released to the world in the AppStore. GodFinger will probably be a few days later. Asuming that it waits the same amount of time that We Rule did before going world wide.

Is there a free game that has been released in a country that is your own? Want to be able to download it without having to actually move there?

AppAdvice.com has an article that describes how to create an iTunes account for a country that you don’t live in so that you can do just that.

For myself, I have been dying to get my hands on GodFinger and We Rule from ngmoco:), but they have released it in Canada first before releasing it to the rest of the world. So I followed the instructions in the article and created an account using an address in Canada. I now have a valid account for Canada and have downloaded GodFinger and We Rule and have started playing both.

The trick is to us Google Maps to find a valid address. You will need to look up a postal code and an area code or valid phone number format for where ever you want to get an account for. Its really not all that hard. It only took me about 5 minutes to get all the info I needed in order to create the account.

Just make sure to select “None” for a credit card since its pretty likely that you don’t have a valid credit card for the region that you are creating an account for. You’ll be up and running in no time!

Are template-based apps next on Apple's list of No-No apps?

appstore.png

Update (3/9 2:54pm): From what I can see so far, this banning/not approving apps that are template-based/cookie-cutter type apps doesn’t seem to be happening. There is a new developer, LMK.com, that has added 51 new apps all of which use the same app to display different data. Just the kind of think that Apple would not be approving if they were targeting them. So, as of this moment, template-based apps are still being approved.

All I can say is: Its about fracking time!

iPhone app purge: Are template-based apps next? | Software | iPhone Central | Macworld: “Apple’s campaign to get tough on iPhone applications is reportedly continuing with a new target: template-based iPhone applications. You can find services that build these so-called cookie cutter applications all over the Web, and they have been used by a variety of prominent celebrities, bloggers, and brands including Ashton Kutcher, blogger Seth Godin, and the U.S. Army.”

There are soooo many applications in the AppStore that are just duplicates of a single app over and over again, sometimes hundreds of times. One of the biggest contributor of “template-based” apps is Brighthouse Labs. Latest approximate count puts them at 4332 applications. An example of this cookie-cutter/template-based application is “iNewsPro”. That single application template has 282 apps so far with titles like:

iNewsPro – Johnstown PA • iNewsPro – Joplin MO • iNewsPro – Parkersburg WV • iNewsPro – Peoria IL • iNewsPro – Rocky Mount NC • iNewsPro – Saginaw MI • iNewsPro – Salinas CA • iNewsPro – Salt Lake City UT • iNewsPro – San Angelo TX • iNewsPro – San Antonio TX • iNewsPro – San Diego CA • iNewsPro – San Francisco CA • iNewsPro – San Luis Obispo CA • iNewsPro – Santa Barbara CA • iNewsPro – Santa Fe NM • iNewsPro – Sarasota FL • iNewsPro – Savannah GA • iNewsPro – Scranton PA • iNewsPro – Sebring FL • iNewsPro – Sharon PA • iNewsPro – Sheboygan WI • iNewsPro – Sherman TX • iNewsPro – Shreveport LA • iNewsPro – Sioux City IA • iNewsPro – Sioux Falls SD • iNewsPro – South Bend IN • iNewsPro – Spokane WA • iNewsPro – Springfield, IL • iNewsPro – Springfield, MA • iNewsPro – Springfield, MO • iNewsPro – State College PA • iNewsPro – Steubenville OH • iNewsPro – St. Joseph, MO • iNewsPro – St. Louis, MO • iNewsPro – Stockton CA

Trust me when I say that there are many more of this specific template alone.

The article says that Apple isn’t planning on removing the existing apps, just not letting any new ones into the store. Personally, I think they should send the developers a letter stating that they need to turn these multi-app templates into a single app with in-app purchasing or Apple will remove them.

There is just no reason for developers to produce thousands of apps when in-app purchasing can compress hundreds of apps into a single app. This will please customers since it means that they don’t have to have several app icons taking up valuable Springboard space, it will be way easier on the developer since they only have to maintain one visible app. I can’t speak for the in-app catalog, but it has to be easier than using Apple’s interface to update entries.

Now it’s just a matter of time to see if this actually happens.

Valve's Steam Confirmed For Mac (updated)

steamlogo.png

Update: It’s official, Valve announced it’s move to the Mac today on their own website.

According to Inside Mac Games, Valve Software sent out info to Mac and PC websites confirming it’s intent to bring Steam and a catalog of games to the Macintosh.

This is great news for the Mac. Steam is a great digital download platform for gaming. Its pretty much as easy to buy games in Steam as it is to purchase applications in Apple’s AppStore. Plus, if for some reason, you need to download your game again, that is just as easy as well.

Looks like there will be a more official announcement at the Game Developers Conference next week (March 9th – 13th).

I can’t wait for Steam to arrive for the Mac. It’s one more sign that the Mac is just as much a gaming platform as Windows is. Sure, there are not as many titles out there yet, but if Valve feels that there is enough to bring Steam over, then its growing pretty quickly.

Woohoo MLB.com At Bat 2010 Is Here!

mlbcom.png

Well, its that time of year again! Baseball season is once again almost upon us and just like clockwork, MLB.com has the latest installment of [MLB.com At Bat 2010](http://bit.ly/ayq5bC) ready for purchase.

This time it’s $14.99 instead of last year’s $9.99 price. I can’t remember what features were in last years app to see if they have up’ed the anti as it were for this version since the price is $5 more than last year. However, the application description states:

  • Spring Training statistics, LIVE audio and LIVE video (mid-March)
  • Breaking league and team news
  • Schedules, rosters and player stats for every team
  • Video library searchable by player and team
  • Enhanced LIVE game video (Regular Season)
  • Home/Away broadcast feed selection (Regular Season)
  • Background audio playback
  • Additional enhancements to come during 2010 season

The new features sound pretty good, although it would be nice to be able to watch games (video) no matter about the blackout rules. It looks like if you purchase the [MLB.tv Premium subscription](http://bit.ly/b2SGJP) ($119.95 yearly / $24.95 a month) you will be able to see all the games on your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad, home or away. A bit pricy, but less than a single ticket to a game a month. If you are truly a fan or you are a fan of a team that isn’t the home team of the city you live in, this might be a good way to go to see them play.

Either way, I’ve already nabbed the app and so far, it’s living up to it’s hype. It will be interesting to see what happens when they turn on the live video/audio for the spring training games.
